We had large crowds of enthusiastic children and families all eager to learn about fire prevention, escape plans, smoke and CO detectors and, of course, Scooby Doo! All the trucks were on display and thanks to Sprinkles Ice Cream and Water Ice for supplying a cool treat. Lt. John Redington sweated it out over a hot (and sometimes out of control) stove, but offered valuable lessons on how to deal with grease fires. Thanks go out to Gene Rahill, Jim Belcher and Marcia Thompson who lead our Open House activities and all the public for coming out to support our efforts.

Some future firefighters received hands-on training and experience as part of Wissahickon Fire Company’s annual Firefighter Camp. In the photo above, Chief George Wilmot is joined by Deputy Chief Mike Frye with three of the camp graduates, from left to right, Lexi Wilmot, Mitchell Seltzer and Jake Frye.

The popular Firefighter Camp is a supervised 4-evening camp designed to give participants a taste of firefighting. The 2011 Firefighter Camp was held July 5, 12, 19 and 26 – 6:30 to 9:30 pm. At camp, participants learned:

Protective gear

Basic fire behavior/tactics

Use of Extinguishers

SCBAs, supply lines & attack lines

Live fire (vehicle car prop) training

Search and rescue

How to use tools, ladders, ropes and knots

Under close supervision, participants will don protective gear and utilize fire apparatus/equipment to extinguish actual training fires. This experience will incorporate the same basic principles that the volunteer and career firefighters of Montgomery County follow every day as they protect our community. Flourtown Fire Company would like to thank Wissahickon Fire Company for hosting the camp and its sponsors Schneider Plumbing, Ambler Savings & Loan, Feast & Fancy catering, and B&Z Cabinets. The camp is hosted by the Wissahickon Fire Company, and assisted by the North Penn, Flourtown and Centre Square Fire Companies.

Using the deck gun on Engine 6, and supplemented by Squad 6, we make it rain for over 100 boy scouts and friends.

Held each Christmas Eve for over 50 years the community has embraced the trek of St. Nick through the neighborhoods and parties and family reunions are actually planned around it. Originally conceived by Rosemary Samtmann and Lou McGettigan in 1957 the Run has grown in popularity and children of all ages enjoy welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus on the rear of Ladder 6 each Dec. 24th. A similar run happens in Erdenheim on the Sunday prior to Christmas yet is much younger having started in 2000. Photos by Bob Wilmot, Jr.

Thank you to the community for 100 years of support!

A Century of Service

Community Carnival and Fireworks

The Carnival and Fireworks were an overwhelming success! Thank you to everyone who came out. We were in awe of the crowd and the response we received for our free Community Carnival and Grand Fireworks display. We have hundreds of photos of the event and will be sharing them here soon. We still have Cookbooks, T-Shirts and Pint Glasses for sale to commemorate the 100th Anniversary and we appreciate your support.

In 1910, Flourtown was started to save lives and property and our mission remains the same today. Starting at 4PM our free community carnival with food, drinks and plenty of fun and games for the kids was packed with families, friends and a turnout estimated at over 1,000 people. As dusk settled 1,000′s joined us as we celebrated the fire company and remember all those that lost their lives on that fateful day nine years ago, 9/11/01.

It was our way of saying thank you to the community for 100 years of support.
