100th Anniversary Banquet

DSC_4337

Flourtown Fire Company gathered on Saturday November 20, 2010 to conclude its Century of Service events with its annual awards banquet. Normandy Farm and Coleman Restaurant was the location of the cocktail party and banquet. President Tim Ernst welcomed the firefighters, their guests and others from area fire companies, the township and friends of the fire company. He read a excerpt from Charlie Samtmann’s history of Flourtown Fire Company which would be presented to all those in attendance later in the evening. He introduced Thomas Timoney, Esq. a longtime friend of the fire company and honorary life member to address the crowd as our guest speaker.

Tom spoke of his earliest memories of the fire company – its annual Flourtown Fair – which ran from 1920 to 1951. And he also spoke of the dedication of those in the fire company and his long relationship with the company and its members.

President Ernst then introduced the Rev. Marcia Thompson and Treasurer Ron Valentine for the invocation and toast prior to every sitting down to a delicious meal. After dinner Chief George Wilmot, III and President Ernst introduced their guests and Banquet Chairman Rob Brzezinski presented the following awards:

On September 10, 2010, Flourtown Fire Company gathered for a cocktail party and celebration of “A Century of Service.” During the ceremonies, the bell from 1910 was unveiled, restored and mounted on a new stand for everyone to enjoy. Also unveiled that evening was a plaque now mounted to the front of 1526 Bethlehem Pike that read “A Century of Service” 1910 – 2010 “In Commemoration of 100 Years of Volunteer Service.”

Community Carnival and Fireworks

The Carnival and Fireworks were an overwhelming success! Thank you to everyone who came out. We were in awe of the crowd and the response we received for our free Community Carnival and Grand Fireworks display. We have hundreds of photos of the event and will be sharing them here soon. We still have Cookbooks, T-Shirts and Pint Glasses for sale to commemorate the 100th Anniversary and we appreciate your support.

In 1910, Flourtown was started to save lives and property and our mission remains the same today. Starting at 4PM our free community carnival with food, drinks and plenty of fun and games for the kids was packed with families, friends and a turnout estimated at over 1,000 people. As dusk settled 1,000′s joined us as we celebrated the fire company and remember all those that lost their lives on that fateful day nine years ago, 9/11/01.

It was our way of saying thank you to the community for 100 years of support.

The “Old Bell” Comes Down

On Saturday, April 3rd members of the Flourtown Fire Company took on a project to bring down a piece of our history from atop the old firehouse.

The “old bell”, was used to alert the firefights of a fire alarm before it was replaced by the mechanical siren that we use today.

We plan to refurbish the bell, and put it on display as it is a piece of our heritage.
