A Century of Service

Saturday, September 11, 2010 – 4PM to Dusk

Community Carnival and Fireworks

Join Flourtown Fire Company, Saturday, September 11, 2010, as we commemorate the anniversary of 9/11 and celebrate 100 years of volunteer service to the community by Flourtown Fire Company. In 1910, Flourtown was started to save lives and property and our mission remains the same today. Come out at 4PM for our free community carnival with food, drinks and plenty of fun and games for the kids and as dusk settles join us as we celebrate the fire company and remember all those that lost their lives on that fateful day nine years ago, 9/11/01.

Then we’ll conclude the festivities with a grand fireworks display behind the firehouse at 1526 Bethlehem Pike. We expects lots of folks so please come early to get the best seats.

It’s our way of saying thank you to the community for 100 years of support.

Station 6 (Flourtown) and Station (29) dispatched on box 32-28 for the commercial building fire. Chief 6 went en-route and was advised by county that roofers were doing work on the building and the building was filling with smoke and possibly had fire in the wall. County also advised that the alarm company was on the phone and was reporting a smoke detector activation for the building. Upon arrival Chief 6 had smoke showing from the area the roofers had been working in. Engine 6 arrived and pulled an 1-3/4 and went to open up the exterior wall. Ladder 6′s crew went to the interior to open up and check for extension in the wall. Fire was found in the wall and extinguished as the crew’s opened up. 29′ s crew assisted with ventilation and checking for extension to the 3rd floor.

Command 6 Now in Service

Flourtown Fire Co. has recently placed in service a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe Command Vehicle. Command 6 is equipped with a full LED lighting package, MDT, SCBA, Extinguishers and various meters. It also has a Command center in the rear.

Vehicle Rescue Aug. 29, 2010

Squad 6, Engine 6, Utility 6 along with Rescue 7 (Wissahickon) and Rescue 29, (Barren Hill) responded to a vehicle accident along Route 73, just South of Butler Pike. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree and the vehicle came to rest back on the roadway. The one occupant was extricated from the vehicle by stabilizing with cribbing and removing the driver’s side door.

Flourtown came home very pleased from the annual Oreland 4th of July parade. We were able to overcome the competition and bring home four trophy’s.

100th Anniversary Golf Outing

On June 21st, Flourtown Fire Co. and their guests “Hit the Links” and had a day of fun, food, and prizes as they tested their skill against fellow firefighter/golfers.

After an early breakfast and the rules of the day were announced, a shotgun start @8:30am kicked-off the round of “better ball” golf, and 23 golfers embarked on a day of fun!

At the conclusion of the round, the Wyndmoor Hose Co. foursome had the lowest total score, winning the bragging rights for the day. However, there is always next time!

Jim Sarsfield, from the Wyndmoor Hose Company won a gift basket courtesy of the O’Towne Tavern for the “Longest Drive”.

Rob Brzezinski, from the Flourtown Fire Company won a Taylor-Made golf bag for getting “Closest to the Hole”.

Following lunch, there was a lottery for various prizes that included signed sports memorabilia from the Philadelphia Flyers, 76ers, and Phillies. Cuba Libre donated a $100 gift card for their restaurant, and there were various other prizes that were won as well.

2010 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend

Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to lead a nationwide effort to honor America’s fallen firefighters. Since 1992, the non-profit Foundation has developed and expanded programs that fulfill that mandate. Their mission is to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes and to provide resources to assist their survivors in rebuilding their lives.

Each October, the Foundation sponsors the official national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. Thousands attend the weekend activities held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Weekend features special programs for survivors and coworkers along with moving public ceremonies.

The Memorial Weekend will be held October 1 – 3, 2010.

The “Old Bell” Comes Down

On Saturday, April 3rd members of the Flourtown Fire Company took on a project to bring down a piece of our history from atop the old firehouse.

The “old bell”, was used to alert the firefights of a fire alarm before it was replaced by the mechanical siren that we use today.

We plan to refurbish the bell, and put it on display as it is a piece of our heritage.
